Vinod Shah
Born in 1934 in Rajkot, Gujarat, Vinod Shah graduated form the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, with a Master’s degree in Painting. Soon after, he joined the same institution as a lecturer, eventually being appointed Head of the Department of Painting.
Shah’s work is simple to look at, and has a lyrical, childlike appeal to it. Frequently working with watercolours on paper, Shah also includes elements of collage in his work. Both his figurative paintings as well as his landscapes have a mysterious sense of being incomplete, with pencil lines seen in between gaps of paint.
Shah has been exhibiting solo since 1960; some of his selected solo shows include ‘Inner Voice' at Catharsis Art Gallery, Ahmedabad, in 2008; and shows held at Articulate Gallery, Mumbai, in 2006; Chigwell Harrow Art Centre, London, and Edinburg University, in 1998; the University of Austin, in 1995 and 1972; and the National Gallery, Singapore, in 1962.
Shah was honoured with the Veteran Artist Award from the All India Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi, in 1999; and the National Award, 'Gaurav Puraskar' from the Lalit Kala Akademi, Gujarat, in 1997. His work has been included in the Paris Biennale in 1969; the LSE Society Third World Art Exhibition, London, in 1981; and the 6th Triennale, New Delhi, in 1986. Vinod Shah lives and works in Baroda.
