Hand Block Prints
The hand block printed artworks by Prithy are a series inspired by forms, textures and patterns seen in architecture. There has always been a strong connection between motifs used in Mughal architecture and the prints on their textile. The tradition follows till date. Her attempt is to look at block printing beyond fabrics. The forms though inspired by architecture are abstracted and depicted economically; colours are used to establish boundaries and depth. Some compositions are whimsical spaces and sections that most likely will never get built but that is her wishful thinking as an architect.

The designs are traced on sheesham wood and hand carved by traditional block makers in Kolkata, India. The block printer comes from a community called ‘chhipa’ who are the traditional hand block printers and hand-loom dyers. The artisans working on the pieces belong to communities where the skill has been passed down to them for generations. The dyes used are non-toxic and azo-free. The paper used is obtained from recycled scraps from the cotton clothing industry. No two prints will ever be the same. The force of the printer’s fists, overlap of blocks, the parts where the paper refuses to let the dye in, all of it makes every print unique and handmade.

Serigraphs

Her series of limited edition works titled ‘Roundendaaf’ explores architecture as a source of creative expression through the medium of serigraphy (silk-screen printing process). The series abstracts everyday moments created in architecture to an almost flat, hard edged composition with use of solid flat unbroken fields of colour.
