I traveled from Mysore to Kolkata to start my Masters Degree, and found Kolkata to be an amazing city. I was stunned to see people everywhere; buzzing around, queuing at railway stations, bus stands, auto stands, temples and wherever. Initially in Kolkata, I encountered a language, that I could not follow, however, in time I managed to learn to communicate.
Kolkata’s culture cannot be compared to any other. The city’s charm is in the up-keeping of its small traditions. Durga Puja being the biggest attraction of Kolkata, but other than that, its small traditions attracted me as an artist. Balloon sellers, roadside barbers, the vegetable vendors, the fish stalls, tea shops, rat-poison sellers, duplicate key makers, pandal work, and those political discourses fascinated me. My works generally revolve around Kolkata and its experiences. My paintings are knitted with people and their activities in monochromatic colour scheme highlighting the subject of prominence. |
