Deepika Sakhat’s inspiration springs from nature. She was born and raised in Mumbai, and hence was never aware of the freedom, which was so uncommon to her surrounding that it was largely a concrete jungle and full of hustle. In 2017 she had an opportunity to do her Masters in printmaking at Baroda University. The journey and the change of the place had a great emancipating effect upon her, “Baroda despite of being small is quite green and spacious and that inspired me to go around villages, farms, and hills nearby. The open space helped me open up and get ahead of the constrained and constricted past which I attempt to reflect in my work”.
This body of work aims at showing the journey of a bird and its embodiment of mother nature. The birds, insects, animals, and creatures that dwell alongside us interests her greatly. Their behaviour, movement, and certain positions, actions and the very spontaneous moment of escaping the human presence creates in her a further curiosity. Their spontaneity is so dynamic, that no matter how minutely we may try, we fail to capture the full essence. “The way they move, their very spontaneous inner reactions are so that we can just acquire a glimpse of what they are. It is this swiftness in them that made me observe them more. The chirping of birds for instance, caught my senses despite of constant chaos in the cities. My works are my reflections of these creatures, who surround us all but go unnoticed. These are an attempt to express the very character of these species. The different techniques in painting and printmaking become a response to their behaviour and so is the colour palette”. |
